Juan Carlos López
A native of Oaxaca, Mexico, Juan Carlos López obtained his Ph.D. in neuroscience from Columbia University (New York) in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel and carried out postdoctoral research at the Instituto Cajal in Madrid, Spain. In 2000, Juan Carlos moved to London to launch the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience, subsequently becoming its Chief Editor. Four years later, he returned to New York City as Chief Editor of the prestigious journal Nature Medicine. In 2014, Juan Carlos moved to the pharmaceutical industry to manage academic research collaborations, first at Hoffmann-La Roche and later at Bristol Myers Squibb. In 2022, he transitioned to the world of philanthropy, joining the RTW Charitable Foundation, where, as Managing Director, he was responsible for the scientific strategy of the organization. Throughout his career, Juan Carlos has served on the Boards of multiple organizations in the non-profit and biotechnology sectors, most recently on the Board of Directors of Keystone Symposia.
Andrew Marshall
Andy Marshall is a thought leader in the biotech community and recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in biotechnology by Scientific American. In his time at Scion Life Sciences, an early-stage venture fund based in New York City, he gained broad experience sourcing assets from academic institutions for seed and series A investments. For over two decades, he headed Nature Biotechnology, one of the biopharmaceutical industry’s leading journals in translational research. As well as writing over 400 articles and editorials covering the evolution of the biotech sector, he has hosted scientific conferences with leading academic institutions around the world. He founded the Nature SciCafe event series of global faculty networking events with Atlas Ventures, JLabs, Merck and Alexandria Real Estate. Andy obtained his Ph.D. in molecular biology and microbiology at King’s College London, where he also carried out his postdoctoral research. He is a voluntary professor at the University of Miami and a recipient of the Helen White Prize.
